I read with great interest the discussion about McCauley props... their length and pitch. I have a 7351 on my C85-12. I see, per John Cooper, that the length is already a no no... I also read Ed's analysis of climb/cruise pitch scenarios. I told my A&P about this and he had a comment and suggestion. His comment was that he'd look into the length issue, but he does not want me to jump on the repitching the prop without seeing what a different pitch might do to performance. His suggestion was to ask the list if anyone has a 48 or 49 prop they would be willing to lend (I would pay all shipping, handling, insurance) that we could install and then see if the improvement is significant enough to warrant an investment. Right now with two 180lb people and about 12 gallons of fuel on board, I get about 250 fpm at 600 MSL at 85 degrees F. When I am alone in the plane, this goes to about 400 fpm. Generally I cruise at 75 kts at 75% with no wind. By the way, the oil temp fixes have all worked well. I flew today with ambient temp around 90 F for almost 2 hours and I got up to 200 degrees with no oil pressure drop.
