Hey Bob: No, it is not normal. It sounds like you may need to remove the
trim wire, clean and lubricate it. One of the first places to check is where the
trim wire attaches to the control. If the housing is too far away from the
trim control (not long enough) it can allow the trim wire to flex too much and
not do its job.
Removal of the wire is not very difficult.
Replacement can be more so if the wire has been kinked or bent. Usually, you can
straighten it through gentle taps with a hammer on a solid piece of metal
backing. (after it has been removed, of course)
A thorough cleaning using a Scotch-Brite pad,
to remove all the gunk and miscellaneous accumulation over the years, and
replacing it while lubricating it with a grease pad, will do wonders for its
operation.

going down.

Measuring the tab itself and you get the proper masurments.
