Dan,

Check out all the paperwork, especially that filed with the FAA.  For
example, if someone filed a form 337 with the FAA saying they were doing the
change from C to D and the FAA inspector signed off on it, that plane could
be ineligible for Sport Pilots.

That *could* be the case, even if no one changed the actual registration.
(There's nothing in A-787 saying a change in registration is *necessary*
after all.)

And check the log books page by page.

But, in essence, that's right:  an engine change does not require a model
change nor prove that a model change happened.
