Tandy,
What is your serial number? Is your header tank stainless steel now? Is it 5 gallon or 6 gallon? The soldered stainless steel tanks were installed in Coupes after the ternplate tanks, somewhere around serial numbers 1400 to 1800. Did your mechanic find blue stains under the bottom of your tank? In order to pressure test your tank it should be removed from the plane, a soap solution should be applied to the seams with a paint brush or rag, and the tank should be pressurized to no more than 4 psi. A good pressure source is the exhaust side of a shop vacuum cleaner. Look for soap bubbles along the seams. Dry completely and resolder as necessary. A very large soldering iron works well. Univair now only makes 6 gallon welded aluminum header tanks which are not really compatible with the old 5 gallon attach system. I recommend trying to solder the leak before looking for another used stainless tank.

Best wishes, Syd

Guys - During my annual inspection, the mechanic has indiicated that he believes that he header tanki is leaking and must be replaced with a stainless steel tank in accordance with AD55-22-2. This poses several questions. I have noticed fuel leakage from the filler nozzle in the past but that seems to have quit when I replaced the cap. I also recollect seeing comments in this forum regarding fuel leaking from the header tank nozzle dlue to a misaligned feed line injecting fuel into the tank agains the cap resulting in leakage in and around the cap. 1. Is it feasible to air test the tank without removing the tank to confirm that the tank leaks? If you go to the trouble to remove the tank to test it, it probably is just as well to replace it 2. What is the price of a stainless tank? What is the best source for a new stainless tank - Univar? Other? What about Precision Service in South Carolina who is parting out a number of Coupes? 3. Any other sugtgestions on how to deal with this?

Tandy
