----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----I like David Clark headsets, and have been using them for many years. I have been using the H10-13X ENC (electronic noise cancelling) model for the past year. It works well and cancels a lot of low freq noise in my ALON cockpit. My hearing isn't getting any better, and my cockpit isn't getting any quieter, so I have been considering purchase of their new Model X-11 ENC. It is considerably more expensive than the 13X ($799 vs $559) but it is 1/3 lighter and designed for comfort. It competes with the BOSE $999 model.
However, David Clark ads don't address "passive noise attenuation", nor is it shown anywhere on their website. Finally, I spoke at length to a Product Info specialist at D. Clark. He confirmed that both headsets have the same ENC with 17-22 dB of "active attenuation", so they work equally well with the ENC turned ON. HOWEVER, the X-11 has "less than 18 dB" of passive attenuation (he wouldn't tell me how much less), whereas the 13 X has 23 dB.
Therefore, the older 13 X is much quieter when the ENC feature is turned OFF, or it fails, or the 9 v battery goes dead....and it is $250 less expensive. I'm staying with my 13X!
I suggest limiting this thread to discussion of these two headsets, rather than re-visiting all the other headsets candidates out there. We recently went through that exercise and it is all in the Tech archives. I am NOT trying to sell David Clark headsets, just passing along potential cost saving info in the event you are considering either of these models. Don
