There is an interesting article on page 113 of the Dec.,'06 issue of EAA Sport 
Aviation. It notes that most batteries have a maximum life of 4 to 5 years due 
to various causes that are not repairable. The author also states that the more 
common failure is sulfating , and describes a method for desulfating. It is a 
lengthy and involved procedure beyond my capabilities. However, over the past 8 
years I have regularly used an inexpensive device to prevent sulfating. It is a 
GUEST Battery Pal automatic float charger (not a trickle charger). I plug the  
AC/DC inverter device into a 12V DC connector behind my seat and connected to 
my battery. I do this almost every night between flights, although it is most 
useful for longer periods of airplane inactivity. The Battery Pal maintains a 
float charge of 13.5 V and replaces the battery self-discharge.  It will not 
overcharge your battery or boil electrolite.   DON
