Randy,

Although I am licensed as a private pilot, I am flying under Sport Pilot
rules (expired medical), and just bought my 415-C 'Coupe in September. It
is insured with AIG.

For anyone having trouble (as I did initially) getting AIG to agree to an
adequate value for their LSA-legal Ercoupe: I was told all the companies
except Avemco rely on Blue Book for their valuations, and that Blue Book is
based on dealer-reported sales. The problem is that the market in LSA-legal
Ercoupes is so hot that most don't bother to use dealers, and Blue Book has
not caught up. Even after sending my agent a bunch of comparable sales, and
an equipment list, he wasn't able to get the underwriters to agree to more
than 10% over blue book, and I wanted an agreed value of $27,000 -- about
what I had put in between purchase price and upgrades.

Going to the AOPA Expo in Palm Springs provided 2 solutions: (1) insure
with Avemco, which had no problem understanding the hot market in LSA-legal
Ercoupes, (2) talked with a V.P. at the AIG booth, Jim Anderson, and got him
to see the light of day: rather than lose my account to Avemco, he agreed
to review the comparable sales, and within a few days, AIG agreed to the
valuation I requested. Invoking Jim Anderson's name should help anyone
insured with AIG to get a more realistic agreed value.

Randy,
I would second Larry's advice. I've insured my Coupe with Global through
Falcon since I bought it in May of 2005. They were very easy to deal
with even though the Sport Pilot Rules were less than a year old at that
time. I assume that you probably are an EAA member (if not I suggest
that you join) and you can access the EAA web site to get any needed
contact information. They originally wanted to insure my plane for a
little less than I had invested in it. However, it was a simple mater to
get them to adjust the premium to the amount I requested. Their checkout
requirements were also reasonable and did not require extensive hours in
type or transition training. I do not know what requirements they will
set for a student pilot but I assume that they will at least be
competitive in both price and restrictions (or lack thereof.)
