Just a point of interest, I have been using an older KX99 hand held radio for
18 years wired to the aircraft antenna( in my coupe the last 2years) and my
Starduster prior to that. I am using a nickel hydride Battery double the
capacity of original battery. It works great, good listening 75 to 100 miles.
Have transmitted 50 miles at 3000 ft before. If it were not for the fact that I
plan on selling my coupe soon, I would power it from my 60 amp alt. My
Starduster is in the rebuilding stage and The hanger will not accommodate two
aircraft, so the beloved coupe has to go.Dick L. N3041H

  Linda,

I think your ICOM should sound crystal clear and work fine for a distance of
a couple or five miles with the rubber ducky. Range after that gets
problematic because of the tiny radiator length of the antenna. I have talked
as far as 7-10 miles with mine, using the rubber ducky antenna in good
conditions. It should certainly work fine at traffic pattern distances.

If you're not getting good communications with it standing on the ramp beside
your plane, then either the rubber ducky antenna is bad (that happens) or the
radio has problems. This is worth resolving so you'll have a reliable backup.
