Have to agree with Al. Find a HAM. We are used to making things work or
finding out just why they don't.

My nickel is on the final section of the old rig. What you have described is
common in older radios; they work good when you first turn them on and
gradually lose power as they warm up. The good/bad thing about
transistorized final sections is that they either work or don't. Regardless
of what name is on it; it will eventually die.

Bottom line: Power, ground, antenna connections; after that, you're into
the box.

Good luck

Tommy

Hogwash! Transponder cable needs to be RG400 if you're replacing any
component. Your avionics guy probably had a boat payment overdue.

Guys and gals, remember that electricity is logical. I can't believe the
time and effort spent on this radio problem, but applaud the efforts of all
involved. What it's going to boil down to is a few things. Corroded
grounds for the antenna, bad antenna wire/connections or a bad radio. If
the ground has high resistance, it could be pushing the finals on that old
radio causing them to fail intermittently. Connecting the ICOM to the
ship's antenna should have shown that, as would a simple OHM meter. My vote
is the old radio, but I'm a heck of a long way away to do any
troubleshooting. Don't forget that if you know anyone who has an amateur
radio license, he can probably advise you better than most avionics shops,
but he's not allowed to admit it or charge you for it.

JRC's do well on EBay. I'm happy with my KX99 after going through a bout
similar to what you did with the Nip radios.

As far as transmission and reception is concerned, my local radio shop guy
told me that he had to replace all of the antenna wiring for a newer type
that is approved. The coaxial I had installed in the plane when I bought it
was no longer "LEGAL" as determined by something federal, Maybe he said FCC,
maybe FAA. I was thinking big bucks instead of listening. It sounded a
little like the mechanic at the tire shop asking my daughter when was the
last time she replaced the air in her tires, but it was not too expensive to
replace the coaxial cable and connectors. It did make a difference and I
have never heard anyone tell me my radio was breaking up since then.

As for the handheld. I bought a JRC four years ago, had to send it back
twice because the first one overheated and did not work, the second one did
not overheat but it did not transmit either, the third one worked OK but the
plugs for the headset had to be replaced twice due to poor quality, I
finally bought some good ones and replaced them myself. The plug for the
battery charger broke several times. poor quality again. three batteries
replaced due to the charger plug. finally I bought the regular battery case
and I am sure I can't depend on it. The 25 year old handhelds that are still
around were made a lot sturdier and if I can find a replacement rechargeable
battery for mine I will throw the JRC into the dark corner of the hangar.
