Re:Re: today's tests Re:radio transmitting problemAll,
I have been fighting the handheld battle with my new last June IC-24. Poor
range both transmitting and receiving. I plan to hook to plane antenna. Now,
as for transmitting and I haven't tried yet, plugging the unit into the
cigarette lighter is supposed to significantly increase the transmitting power.
Seems xmitting on batteries is inherently weak.

Everyone,

The radio shop in Chino, that I'd thought was "Spruce's," is actually
independent, and unfortunately was closed today, even though Spruce itself is
open. So it looks like further detective work on my radio transmission problem
will have to wait until Wayne's radio is here and I can swap them out.

Wayne: if you're reading this before I can get to you by phone, would you
kindly let me know a tracking # for the package so I can figure out what day to
expect it, so I can line up help at TOA to swap it into my plane?

Re: Ed's remark below re: what the ICOM *should* be able to do:
Today I tried transmitting from the ICOM alone, just standing on the ramp,
next to my plane, within line of sight of the TOA tower and maybe 1/2 mi. away
(they're mid-field and I'm at West end). Not using any headset, and the ICOM
not hooked up to anything, just using its own freshly-charged battery and its
own rubber antenna. Ground Control replied, "Ercoupe calling Ground, your
transmission is very weak." The ICOM A-23 is supposed to have 5 watts
transmitting power. Does this sound like expected performance? If not, please
reply so I have ammunition with which to contact the manufacturer; I think I'm
going to have to go around the salesman I bought it from and contact the ICOM
National Sales Manager directly.

  Thanks, Everyone!

  Linda

    Linda,

I think your ICOM should sound crystal clear and work fine for a distance of
a couple or five miles with the rubber ducky. Range after that gets
problematic because of the tiny radiator length of the antenna. I have
talked as far as 7-10 miles with mine, using the rubber ducky antenna in
good conditions. It should certainly work fine at traffic pattern
    distances.

If you're not getting good communications with it standing on the ramp
beside your plane, then either the rubber ducky antenna is bad (that
happens) or the radio has problems. This is worth resolving so you'll have
    a reliable backup.
