I find that if I keep my nose tire (500 - 4) inflated to 20 lbs. I have
no shimmy problems. I check and add if necessary on the 1st of every
month. I also put 24 lbs. in the mains.

On my Coupe with the single fork, I found that nose tire pressure
played a big part in whether I had shimmy or not. Slight less
pressure was much better than slightly more. Of course there's not a
C150 or C172 that hasn't had or does not presently have nose wheel
shimmy....that have had many hours devoted to trying to correct. roger

Bob:
Even with a brand new bearing and everything in good working order,
you will
have .060" or so play each way measured at the tire. There is no way
to put
a preload on the bearing, so as long as there is little or no weight
on it
it'll have noticeable play.
If tightening the wheel nut helped a shimmy, then the nut must have
not been
tight enough to start, or there may be too much wear between the
bearing and
the axle. It should be a "light press fit".
Another source of play is between the bearing outer surface and the
right
wheel half. ( The left half is supposed to be a loose fit.)
Conversion to a dual fork is over rated....

On my next landing I
experienced a significant shimmy on roll out. The AP then tightened
the
wheel (as much as he could) and the shimmy disappeared. After he
tightened the wheel I pushed on it and felt the wobble. He allowed as
how this was expected but not to worry and replace the bearing.
