Linda,

The best way has two parts and applies to all replies:

1. Turn off the automatic copying of the original message when you are
making a reply. Much more often than not, you do not need any of the
original text to make a reply. With modern e-mail programs and forum
programs, you can choose to look at message threads, if you need.

If you DO need to copy text, you can simply highlight and copy just that
text. (Hint: after highlighting the text use cntl-C to copy it to the
clipboard. Then put the cursor in your reply and press cntl-V to poke it in
that spot. (Think of the V as an arrow-head that'll poke the clipboard info
into that spot.)

Alternatively, you can highlight and delete the unwanted text. I did this
for years, then did a test and found the preceding method was less work, on
the average.

2. Do a quick copy and paste on the subject line so you are responding with
the exactly correct subject line as that of the individual message. This
helps ensure that the aforementioned thread software handles things
correctly.

This is especially critical when you respond to one message out of a digest.
But, it's also important when responding to individual messages. We've all
seen how responses get added on and added on ad infinitum. It's especially
wasteful to have a few-word answer at the beginning (or end or middle) of
pages and pages of quoted text.

Thanks for asking.

Ed
