Getting switched onto this group a bit late, but due to the nature of this question I can ascertain that you are not A&P rated. You need to use what your A&P specifies, and he needs to use particularly what the parts book specifies, unless there has been a superceedure. If it is listed somewhere that a regular AN bolt would be an acceptable substitution for the prop bolts (and I don't know if they are) then it would be fine. If not, do not randomly substitute what you may think is an acceptable replacement. Prop bolts for this application may be X-Rayed, magnafluxed or otherwise inspected for integrity, according to the manufacturer's specs. I think I would rather spend an extra $30 or so dollars knowing that my prop is attached with the proper hardware and it will not depart the airplane while in flight. Many have!
The Ercoupe has suffered much over the years due to poor maintenance techniques and do-it-yourselfers thinking that whatever is laying around the hangar or garage is okay to strap on and use. It is thankfully beginning to stop a bit due to the newest level of experienced ownership realizing that a well maintained aircraft will keep them and their passenger safe as well as extending the service life of the plane. We all need to do what we can to please make sure we can fly these things long into the future, so always do your research! It seems most people use the AN bolts. I don't think all the prop bolts are available now a days. The prop bolts have a little bit bigger head on them. I do see that Univair has the an6h31a listed on their web site for $6 though if you want to use them.
