John, When I was doing my check ride with the pilot examiner one of his 
observations was that I was too abrupt with my throttle movements. He 
wanted me to pull it out slowly and gradually when coming in for a 
landing and not push it in too fast when increasing power. I can't say 
that it will solve your problem with backfiring but it is another place 
to look. O.T. He was 76 and rode a motorcycle. Mike @C35
