My 415-C came with an access door. You can just about *check* the oil through it, if you don't mind dripping, but would need a huge long funnel to add any oil through it. And the gascolator fuel check cannot be done through mine. The principal purpose it has served for me is that when the corner Dzeus fastener gets stubborn & won't open, my then-A&P showed me how to stick an arm through the access door and manually push outward on the cowl near that fastener, and fiddle around and mutter under your breath until it will let go.
I agree that it is an eyesore. It also interferes with putting on the cool metal Ercoupe emblems.
