Dave,
I think that all depends on where you fly. If your airport is in a valley in the mountains, climb is very important. If you live in flat country, climb is not so important.

I heard the speed is a bit better but the climb is A LOT better. True?

I have the O-200 in my Ercoupe and like it. However I don't think the performance difference between the modified C-85 and the O-200 is enough to justify the extra work required to install the O-200 (which requires cowling related work that is a pain to do).
Perhaps there are other compelling reasons for switching to the O-200.

Just my opinion....

    John,

    Thoughts for you to consider:

If you're going to do a 0 time overhaul, you might consider
hunting for a 0-time O-200 and change up to that.

Make sure the local FSDO will sign off on the engine upgrade
before spending money on an O-200. As I recall, you can't use the
STC for an actual O-200 installation without upgrading to the D model.

(Did I hear that Skyport and the fellow with the 1320 lb. STC is
working on getting the O-200 approved on the C and CD models with
the 1320 lb. STC? Any progress report?)

Alternatively, the O-200 crank STC would be worth doing since it
still leaves the engine an official C-85 and approval is not a
    problem.

    Ed
