Here is a copy of what I sent to Aviation Consumer:

  Aviation Consumer News Editor
  To Whom It May Concern

Being an avid reader of Aviation Consumer News, and a Forney Aircoupe owner,
I am highly offended that a great magazine like yours, would publish such an
article as is in a recent addition of your publication, without checking the
accuracy of the content.

Your recent article on the Legacy LSA’s is very disappointing and insulting
to us who own and fly these Great flying machines.

I would suspect, that the writer of this article is neither an owner, nor has
had much time in flying an Ercoupe. He appears to be mostly “word of mouth”
informed.

I too, fell into this category until just a few years ago. Against the advise
of many “Word of Mouth” experts, I purchased a 1957 Forney Aircoupe without
rudder pedals. May I inform you, your writer, and your readers that it is a
GREAT airplane to fly.

I had been Ill-informed, misinformed, also, by the uneducated in Ercoupes, as
to how unorthodox the airplane was, with or without rudder pedals. The common
name for them was “Scarecoupe.” Also, I was misinformed, as was your writer,
concerning the speed at which they fly, which is 110- 115 mph. I find it to be
great fun and an extremely safe airplane to fly, with impressive cross country
speed performance.

Your writer may also be more than honest about corrosion and AD’s. Yes, a
Coupe that was being flown in aerobatic maneuvers, which it is not Certified
for, came apart and crashed. I am sure many other makes of airplanes have had
similar treatment as well. In the post crash investigation some corrosion was
found to exist. Corrosion has not been determined, in any way, to be part of
the reason the plane came apart. Because of this finding a “Service Bulletin”
has been issued. This is not an AD as some may think. It is only mandatory if
the plane is being used for commercial purposes.

I would suspect that your author has neither much experience flying or
researching the proven characteristics of the Ercoupe, which is in great demand
as a LSA
In the future, please pay more attention to the accuracy and content of your
great magazine.
I am sure your intention is to provide your readers with pertinent and
honest evaluation of different aircraft. That’s something that this article
does not do.

  Sincerely,

THE SENILITY PRAYER :
Grant me the senility to forget the people
I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and
the eyesight to tell the difference.
