Everyone - Let me chime in a little about insurance in general. For those who don't know, I'm an aviation defense atty. who works primarily in aviation cases. We defend insureds at the cost of the insurance companies.
All of the aviation insurance companies are good, and they pay their claims. Whoever, there are two things to consider: 1. Every now and then, it really helps to have a relationship with an agent (broker) who can go to battle for you when there is a conflict with the insurance company. Little things, like the value you place on your plane, getting a claim settled quickly, fixing a plane rather than totaling it after an accident are examples of what I mean. For instance, years ago, my wife had a client with a Luscombe. The current owner searched high and low for this particular airplane, because his father had once owned it. On the first dual instructional flight, it was ground looped. It was a close call, economically, whether to total it or fix it, and the adjuster was leaning towards totaling it. Because my wife knew the adjuster personally, she told him te story about the airplane's history, and he then paid to fix it. Not that my wife is any super agent (Of course, I'm a little biased in this regard), but that's the kind of service you may someday need from your broker. 2. An independent broker may or may not value your business as a potential or existing customer. To be brutally frank, all of them work on a commission basis, and a few think they are too important to deal with the "little account" like Ercoupes owners, whose premium is at the bottom end of the scales. There agents think they would rather spend there time working the account of a Bonanza owner who is going to produce a commission many times what an Ercoupe will. So, my advice is to find a broker who talks to you, answers your questions, and appears hungry for your business, and treats you like a valued client. If you get the short shrift, or the person appears haughty, thank them for their time, and go elsewhere. That broker is tolerating you, not serving you.
