No, Ed, it's the other way around. You put a quantity of water in a container. Carefully mark the level of the water with a Sharpie pen or equivalent. Add a quantity of car gas. The water will be on the bottom and the gas will be above it. Shake the container vigorously for 15 seconds or so, without letting any liquid out. Let it settle for about 5 minutes. The water will still be on the bottom with the gas above it. If any alcohol was present in the gas, it has migrated to the water, so the level of water will now be higher. If no alcohol was in the gas the water level will still be the same. A small diameter container works better than a large diameter container since small diameter containers show the level difference more dramatically.
