Let me open up a subject that many don't want to talk about but should
be discussed. I have been flying since 1951 and have over 5,000 hours
in many aircraft. My dream of owning an Ercoupe came true last month
and I am having a blast. In some of the recent blogs we were talking
about emergency landings or nose down slow approaches. The Ercoupes
design with the open windows and lack of frame support overhead brings
a question. In the event of an off airport, soft field landing, what is
the preferred procedure before touchdown ? Some CFI's have suggested
opening the windows if time permits for easy egress. Others say to land
with the nose as high as possible to reduce the possibility of the nose
digging into the turf, resulting in a flip over. This may be morbid but
I am always thinking of the what if's and how I would handle such a
situation. It will in no way reduce my love of flying the Coupe for
this will probably be my last aircraft I own as Oct 1 I am going Sport
and flying off into the sunset smashing bugs for many enjoyable years
to come. So what say you ????
