Dick, It should be connected to the static line from the pitot/static combination tube under your left wing. You should have a thick tubular probe that has the pitot tube opening on the front and static openings around the circumference of the cylinder. There should be two lines from this to the cockpit. Venting the static opening of the instruments to the cockpit will give much less accuracy as it will vary based on airspeed, the degree of door/window opening, and any slip (i.e. in a turn even in a 2-control Coupe since coordination isn't quite perfect).
