The manual was written in the mid forties.  In sixty years much has been 
learned about metallurgy and engines.  At 540 degrees your cylinders have 
sustained some type of damage and/or degradation.  400 degrees is where your 
personal alarms should be going off.  At 400 degrees you need to be doing 
something to get the temps down.

  Ideal oil temp is 180, that is what it takes to remove the water. My
