Ed,

You're right about the radar and precipitation, but what the radar doesn't show is low clouds and fog and reduced visibility. KAUW is IFR right now because of 800 foot ceilings. I'm pretty conservative about flight conditions when I travel, and while I don't mind an isolated (small) MVFR area, I still want to have mostly fairly decent VFR weather along the way.

I'm watching carefully to see if there is a window where I can make it up from the St. Louis area. Unfortunately, the big hunk of precipitation in the western part of Missouri is heading my way. If I could find an opening into Illinois it might not be too bad up to Wisconsin, but I have to get through, and currently the conditions don't look very hospitable.

I really want to get there, but not badly enough to take any real risks.

Eliacim,

It looks like the weather will blow by you around 8:30-10:30.

Here’s a URL that’s worth memorizing or keeping in your billfold. It’s the full continental U.S. weather radar composite with loop for an hour or two’s worth of motion:

http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php

Useful rule of thumb for long-distance VFR flying: You can almost always get where you’re going if you are willing to detour a state or so sideways to go around the weather.

Subject: [ercoupe-flyin] Stuck in Warrensberg Missouri

On my way to the EOC in Wausau, I got stuck in Warrensberg, Missouri due to severe weather north, all the way to Oshkosh...

I am next to Whiteman AFB, but for some reason they won't let me see the B-2s...
