I received 5 responses to my query. All were useful in helping us make our decision concerning removing the control column. Having already spent over two hours searching for that magic orientation that would allow the column to be withdrawn, we opted for Lynn Nelsen's suggestion of opening a gate in the floor support member to clear the base of the column. As a result, we did not have to continue wrestling the column in confined space and it provided the advantage of being able to withdraw the column relatively easy in the future for period inspection and maintenance.
