Back in the late 80's when the ICAO first called for identifiers, Couper's were
alerted to us FO-2 (Foxtrot Oscar Two) with a supplemental "Slash" followed by
the codes for Transponder equipment, IFR, and such. I have used this code
Nationally and Internationally ever since. Of course I always return to the
controllers with an authoritative air, in the hope that they will think that I
know what I'm talking about. Har Har!

I use ERCO when I file DUATS flight plans which is always my case since I am
constantl;y flying in the DC ADIZ. Now the controllers usually pick up the word
" Ercoupe" on my initial call and no more questions. I usually call FAA
Approach Control before I enter the ADIZ just to be sure my transponder is
working. Don't want an F-16 trying to slow down to my speed and fall out of
the sky.

Even the FSS know what to use when I file for longer cross countrys. When
going over the "mountains" in the East I usually get flight following. Added
peace of mind - radar flight following, transponder ready to squak 7700 if I
get in trouble and direct comm with FSS or FAA radar. I figure my taxes are
paying for this so why not use the service.

Also with P-40, Camp David ,hot all the time and expanded more and more it is
almost a must. With the Presidential elections coming soon be sure you check
NOTAMS before flying for many times the candidates will pop into an airport
which initiates a restricted area.

The identifier for Ercoupes and yes Forney's and Alons and even those
weird things that came after that is ERCO!

I too, am constanly being asked the identifier. If they don't understand
it I spell out AIRCOUPE, and let them deal with it how ever they want.
