Percy,

Do you know about the laminated shim that takes the vertical play out of the
steering collar?? I don't know if it is on all nose gear struts, but on the
Alon it could be a fix for a shimmying nose wheel.

Best Regards,

Wayne DelRossi

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Nose job (part III)

We have gone after "the usual suspects" - wheel balance, inflation
pressure and loose scissors. No joy.

I'm now looking at the steering color (P/N 34029), the outer oleo
strut assembly (P/N 34080) and the oleo strut steering sleeve (P/N 34057).

When I took these apart, I found no grease inside the collar & sleeve.
The bare metal on the inside was scored to some degree; we're talking
actual scratches here. I put the parts back together with grease, and
applied grease through the zerk fittings until it oozed out around the
edges.

Test taxi showed some remaining shimmy; not as bad as when Opal and I
started. When I got the nose back up in the air, I saw where the
outer oleo strut assembly would wiggle within the sleeve/collar. I
know some movement is needed. How much is acceptable?

Would it be worth trying to measure the outside diameter of the outer
oleo strut assembly and the inside diameter of the oleo strut steering
collar? Would the measure tell anything? Are there wear limits
published anywhere (I'll be looking around the pubs I have)?

Thanking you in advance for any information.
