After the confusing amusing discussion, I realized I'll stick with what I did 
for the last 9 years.
No marks at all.
When I drained the contents of the header tank, I noticed that the float almost 
disappeared in the gas cap when there were 3 gallons left. That is good enough 
for me. I know as long the bobber bobs, I still have thirty minutes, else I 
should be in a traffic pattern.
