You can expect a few challenges with an old bird and today when I landed back at home field I got a big noise and then a real bad shimmy as I eased the nose gear down. Bit of a bang just after the the nose gear touched the runway and then the bad shimmy/vibration for about 5 seconds (it was a gentle landing so no smacking the runway). Shimmy calmed down as I decelerated.
Once parked I surveyed what I could from my observation of the nose gear. I have what appears to be the Electrol nose gear from the parts cataolg. Looks like the bearing (inner lower 415-34315) slid down the oleo as I found the inner lower bearing at the bottom (at the top of the wheel support). Bearing has a couple scrape marks on it like it was scratched by a nut or bolt. Is this a common problem? How big of a deal will it be to repair it? Just got the a/c back in the air with a new engine which is running great. Now this. Patience is a virtue! My serial number is 4582 and I have a '47 415-CD. Thanks in advance for any advice/counsel. Grounded for now. Rich Green
