A pack of "smokes" takes up too much room in a coupe! ;-) I don't remember them as too obtrusive but there's probably some requirement for it.
In these new days of CYA and non-technical FAA inspectors, I'm not too sure getting a 337 to eliminate it would be an easy task. That's why I suggested a DER to write up the paperwork and then just go for a full blown STC so that you can sell the install rights recouping some of the outlay and allowing folks to also make the mod legally. That said, I don't think I'd want to eliminate it even if you could.
