Folks - Below is an email I received from my old flight instructor who still flys his Cub, an Aztec and also is an Examiner. Important is the comment about having the ELT portable. We also belong to the Silver Wings but are not telling our age. I soloed in 1951. Jim N3439H KFDK ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes Jim, it is very important and thank you for clarifying the system for us. I would like to forward this on to the FAAST team leader for their consideration and broadcast. Jim, I am an old Antenna Engineer and you are entirely correct in your antenna locations. My aircraft all have removable elt's with seperate antennas for portable use, so if you go down I would suggest that the portable elt be located as high as possible for better broadcast coverage. On my first trip to Oshkosh on our departure they rushed me into take off on the runway and there was a place where the runway was a couple of inches higher than the taxiway, so I held the stick back and hit it pretty hard whicvh set off the ELT. The tower called in the blind for all pilots to check their ELT's and sure enough the bump had set it off. So I purchased another one that doesn't activate on a bump, but activates on a short deacelleration mode, otherwise it activates when there is a several "G" force applied to it. Thanks Again, David -----Original Message----- From
