Dear Professor,
With regard to your suggestion of a pad, if you would kindly
look at that picture again you can clearly see a ½ inch green rug pad between
the wood and the horizontal stabilizer.
Also, if you read again what I wrote, you will see that I refer to it as
a “wood structure with pads”.
Additionally, on the hanger floor, you can see the same pad material on
top of a piece of wood to provide some cushioning for the rear tie down ring.

with something so as to not scratch airframe.
Wow! At my energy level it looks like just too much work.
I have another method, it's called
"The Old Soft Blanket Trick" with sand bags and I let my son do the hard part.
