Worth noting by all.

I opened the Tach.  Against all odds, the cable is fine.  The gauge is not.

The problem was that the gears on the hour counter are press-to-fit.  They
had slid out of place on their shaft.

AND

The disk magnet was also press to fit on its shaft.  It slid completely off
the end.

The TACH was made by Mitchell Aircraft Products of Lake Bluff Illinois.  Not
terribly old.  Makes me grumpy.
