Hi Jerry,

I think there are 10 Ercoupes in the UK, nearly all of them flying at the
moment.

You are thinking of the NPPL, the UK's National PPL introduced a few years
ago. I have an NPPL rather than the full JAA licence that is roughly
equivalent to a FAA licence.

As you say, the NPPL is limited to simple single engine aircraft, daytime
VFR and maximum of 4 seats. The medical is a sign-off by your GP (personal
doctor) that you are fit to qualify for a Heavy Goods Vehicle or Public
Service Vehicle drivers licence (trucks or buses to you guys). This medical
standard is higher than for a normal car drivers licence.

The medical requirements can be found here:
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/medical/ataglance.aspx

Details of the NPPL can be found here:
http://www.nppl.uk.com/

The NPPL scheme has allowed many to keep flying with deteriorating health.
Realistically a Class 2 medical doesn't detect many medical conditions, and
some argue that your personal physician should know you better and has your
historical records. Certainly I am not aware of any fatalities attributed
to the 'different' medical (I refuse to use the word 'lower').

EASA, the European body for aviation, is proposing to introduce the LPL,
Leisure Pilots Licence. This is modelled on the UK NPPL but has slightly
revised and defined medical standards as the medical requirements for
drivers varies from country to country.

I know all this as I have had some medical problems and only qualify for a
car drivers licence. This allows me a restricted NPPL where I can fly solo
or with another pilot, but not take a passenger.

I hope this helps!

Best regards,

Mike
