Bill and the group

I have checked many issues od coupe Capers, Fred's book, and others, and not
foune the comments about larg aircraft training...707, 727, 737, 747, etc.....
and then asked Ed Burkhear  if he had any valid info (attached).  Sorry to say
I cannot confirm my statement...BUT, I still believe it :)  :).

I apologize for passing on potential false info.

I hope your son is able to verify the use of Ercoupes in training 707 Pilots,
etc.. :)

Best regards,

Harry

Thanks Harry.  One of my sons works for Boeing so maybe I'll ask him about it
also.

Cheers,
Bill

HI Bill,

My understanding is that Boeing utilized Ercoupes in original DC 8 tng.. The
engine mounts are on the wings in a position that prevents wing low slips to a
landing. I may be wrong  noting the DC-8, but I think correct.

I'll try to find references.

Hi Harry (off list)

That's really interesting.  Do you have a reference for that that you could
share with me?

Thanks,
Bill

BTW, Several large airplanes land the same way, as engine placement will not
allow a low wing approach, so the pilots were trained in Ercoupes on how to
make X-wind landings in a crab.

Harry,

I remember hearing/reading that, too.  Perhaps we got it from Fred at one of
his talks at a convention.

We might find it hard to document.

If you have any doubters about Coupe landings being the way to go, refer people
to the video linked from my Coupe-specific flying techniques (i.e. crosswind
landings) web page.  I bet those were fun test flights!

A quick Google search found no authoritative references.  I didn’t find any
mention of it in the 50% of the Boeing references I looked up in the text of
“From the Ground, Up.”
