I agree with the gentleman that stated that if you are using a detergent oil, 
it will be dirty in apprearance after only a few hours.  If so, it is doing its 
job, as the purpose of the detergent is to grab the carbon and dirt and hold it 
in suspension.  On those with a filter, much of the suspended items will be 
taken out by the filter.
Before detergent oils were common and recommended, we used non detergent oil.  
The solids were deposited in the oil pan and other low areas.  When tearing an 
engine down for overhaul, we found large amounts of goop and muck that had to 
be removed. This should not occur in an engine in which detergent oil was used 
and regularly changed.  If not changed frequently enough, the oil will become 
saturated with solids and contaminates and what it cannot hold in suspension 
will be deposited somewhere.
If you are using 1 qt every 8 hours and your plugs are not fouling, I 
personally wouldn't worry.
