The 601XL is taking an undeserved hit. Before buying my Coupe I built and
flew a 601XL and it was an outstanding aircraft for its class. If it and the
firewall forward were built to spec. and the aircraft were operated within
its limitations, understanding that it has significant elevator authority,
it is a great aircraft. The cable tensions are the responsibility of the
builder or inspection signer and it has its quirks the same as the Coupe.
You have to know what you fly. When I did my first annual on my Coupe I found
that the A&P/AI who had signed it off for the last 3 annuals had signed
off an aircraft with elevator cable tensions in the 30 to 40 lb range and
cable droop was apparent. I bought a tensiometer and corrected the problem. I
also found that he had signed off a split elevator with the rigging set for
a full elevator and believe me it got my attention the first time I flew
it with the new tension and rigging. Give the Heintz's a break until they
have a chance to respond.
