I am not interested in selling either, but am happy to load them to anyone. I insured them for $500.
Please keep me updated on who you mail it to, name, address, phone. Ken Burdette has also requested the loan, he needs to be next after Marvin. Bill To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Date: Thu, 30 Apr 2009 11:27:40 -0400 Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Loaner Cable Gauge Update I'm done working with the tensiometers that Bill Biggs has so kindly offered to us. I tested the C-8 military surplus gauge using 1/8" cable at 66 lbs and with 5/32" cable at 176 lbs. In an effort to improve accuracy, the 66 lb test weight was lugged down to the post office to use their scale which is maintained to a known standard. Yep, I'm a weenie. The 176 lb test weight was weighed on a bathroom scale. Attached is a picture Bill's cable gauge under a test load. The motorcycle jack helped to manage the higher weights. The gauge showed a tendency to read high at both the 66 lb and 176 lb test points. While the average of several readings typically fell within 5%, individual values occasionally fell outside the 5% range. Bill also sent a Borroughs cable tension gauge with a range of 20-35 lbs. I tested this and the C-8 gauge using 1/8" cable with a test weight of 26 lbs (post office scale) and found the readings to be within 5% for both. I really liked the C-8 gauge and was impressed with how well it worked over such a wide range. I would suggest though to anyone that intends to use these tensiometers on an airplane, to first work with them under known test loads to get a first hand feel for accuracy and precision. I would be happy to contribute the 6' sections of 1/8" and 5/32" cable with swaged terminals that I prepared for this. I spoke with Marvin Dunlap yesterday and if it's ok with you Bill, he would like to use them next. He wanted to check the cable tension on his Ercoupe and set cable tension on the 4 place coupe that he is building. He also said that he had a very accurate homemade scale so he could provide another independent check. If you give me permission to send them on to Marvin, do you want me to insure them and if so at what value? If, after Marvin, there is no further interest from the group, I would sure be interested in buying the C-8 if you were inclined to sell. Thanks again for letting me use these.
