My wife would say that this term came from the feeling of
vulnerability at having
nothing above or beside you as you fly with the windows down. She has
about
2000 hours flying with me and says the coupe scared her the first
time we went
up just because she felt like she would fall out if we hit rough air
or did a steep
turn. That feeling lasted about 20 or 30 minutes.

Every since I have been interested in Ercoupes( early fifties), I
have heard that term. The first ride I ever had in a low wing was

just forget anything you have ever heard about these."

Really now!
I'm in the hangar working on my beloved Ercoupe with the local,
well-seasoned mechanic, when in walks an old friend of his and she
says,
"Hi Russ, I see you're working on a scare coupe"!
She really was a nice lady so I didn't say something like, "this is
MY Ercoupe and it's the safest thing you'll ever fly, so back off!"
That's what I really wanted to say. But the question remains,
where did that come from? Has anybody else ever heard that?
