Another approach:

You need to ensure hat your approach carries enough kinetic energy to break
your descent prior to hitting the ground. If you climb to a safe altitude,
establish a power off glide at some test speed, say 75 mph, then, once
established, pull the yoke back enough to stop the descent (altimeter stops
unwinding.) If you can hold level flight for 3 seconds, you have enough
energy to keep from crashing into the runway. If you can hold level flight
longer, try a slower speed next time; if not, try a faster speed.
