At the times of handheld GPS I see the Directional Gyro as the least desirable
instrument in a VFR Coupe.

Every handheld GPS has a compass mode that in essence is a directional Gyro
display, but a way better one than any mechanical instrument.

Instead of showing your heading, it displays the true course your aircraft is
doing. To stay on course with a mechanical DG, you need to calculate the wind
factor onto your course. And that factor is an unknown at altitude. Also the
instrument deviates over a short amount of time and one has to recheck with a
compass every so minutes.

In the contrary, the GPS course indicator is showing your precise course, no
need to compare with the compass, no deviation calculation. Just precise
measurements.

Wayy better than the old DG.

I would spend my money on a good handheld GPS rather than on a DG.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] DG

Does anyone have a DG for our ercoupes in good condition that you would
consider selling?
IF so, email me at [email protected], or call 715-309-2205. I am looking
for one reasonably priced. Thanks for reading this note.
