Glen, Linda,

The fairing fits early and later style Ercoupes, regardless of type of fork
used.

There are two different styles gear fairing. One for the early steel scissors,
one for the later forged aluminum gears.

The idea was to streamline the nose gear strut that extends pretty far just
inches away from propeller arc. The air pressure here is much higher than on
any other in-flight location. Plus have in mind that the first flight of the
Ercoupe was in 1937, a time where streamline design was implemented everywhere
in the states. The beauty of our Ercoupes is a reflection of that time period.

The nose gear fairing should not be combined with the snubber cable. Either way
this or that.

Linda

The part you are referring to is the nose gear fairing, not to be confused with
the nose wheel fairing. It was on the early Coupes when they left the factory.
During flight, the nose wheel strut extends down due to gravity. When that
happens, the fairing changes position from horizontal (while the plane is on
the ground) to vertical. It is directly behind the chrome tube, the piece that
you only see a couple of inches of when on the ground but appears several
inches longer when the nosewheel is off the ground. Anyway, this fairing is
for aerodynamics. As the air gets disturbed as it is forced around the strut,
the fairing was designed to minimize this disturbance. I have only seen it on
the original single forks, not the dual forks. Additionally, I believe it only
fits on the original scissors, not the later model scissors. Hope that helps.
Maybe someone else can explain it better or add further info.

Glen
