This reminds me of back in the Air Force about 1961 when I first started flying
C-130's at Dyess AFB. On a local flight, the crew heard a thump and the fire
warning light for #2 engine illuminated. The Aircraft Commander gave the
command to shut down #2 and just after he did so, the scanner in the back of
the airplane said "Sir, we just lost #2". The pilot said he was aware of it
because they just shut the engine down and the scanner said, "No sir, I mean,
its gone".
The prop landed just in front of a pickup truck driving on the highway south of
Abilene, TX. They say the driver only needed a change of shorts and some hand
steadier before he was on his way again.
