This is similar to Canada's "OWNER MAINTAINENCE" Catagory for the older
aircraft  that no longer are in production.  We have had this since several
years and it seems to be great. Some of the early Cessna 150's can be in this
Catagory. The Canadian system apparently goes quite a lot further, yet appears
to have been a success safety wise also.
I would think that the American FAA has been closely watching our system.
Perhaps your "Experimental Catagory" is closer but I am not too familiar with
the US rules.  The selling price did not appear to have been a problem here as
many feel that many OM aircraft are better aircraft as a result. Keeping good
tech logs is important.
My J3 Cub replica is a " 51% Rule"  and I really enjoy building it.    Test
flight soon.
If I was younger I would build an Ercoupe but the Cub may well be my last
project, who knows ?
