Jim -- for your wife (and any others concerned about sun exposure),
Originally, my biggest concern when first contemplating an Ercoupe
was getting sunburned through that "greenhouse" cockpit (redhead skin
= Keep Out Of Direct Sunlight!) John Cooper at Skyport was a huge
help to me on this. The 'Coupe I was contemplating had had a new
bubble windshield installed a couple of months before. John very
kindly searched their records and confirmed that it had come from
Skyport, and then sent me the manufacturer's specs about its UV-
transmissibility. I ran those specs by a friend with a degree in
optical physics, who reassured me that those meant it blocked the
sunburn wavelengths of UV. After nearly 3 yrs., I have never gotten
burned flying with the canopy closed (doing pre-flight outside the
plane is another matter entirely). The broad-brimmed hat does help
with glare, though, since returning to my home airport (KTOA) usually
means flying directly toward a setting sun...and it is helpful
protection when the sun hits through open window(s).

And, as Linda does, my wife will want a sun hat in that greenhouse of a
cockpit.
