If you didn't notice a drastic change in performance then the gauge is
broken.  At 700 the cylinder should be barely firing, either way too rich or
way too lean.  Do you have a multi-probe EGT?  What are the other cylinders
doing?

IMHO, an EGT gauge on a C-series Continental is more of a distraction than
anything else.  The mixture distribution between the cylinders is too uneven
to make much use of it.
