CONCLUSION: In theory, the fairing, in fully extended configuration, 
should cause much less drag than the snubbed nose wheel or the unaired, 
extended nose strut.

 It's not the extended configuration that causes drag. It is the fact, 
that in the extended position, the bulk (wheel and forks) are below the 
prop wash.  This will give you less drag and more speed.  It worked, on 
my 6 months of GPS verified speed increase when I took the snubber off. 
I just didn't like the feel of my landings without the snubber.
