I had the same problem  turned out the back bearing was locked up and was
spining in the housing.  after ovehaul new bearings new brushes I used a drill
wrapped the gear to the drill with duck tape hooked up to an volt meter and the
generator to a battery and spun it up  the result was 14.5 volts which is
good.  least you know the generator works then can check the regulator.

A common problem, I know. Yesterday I noticed that when I started the plane the
ammeter was not showing the charge I was used to . I revved it up and it hopped
up and showed a charge. As I was flying, I began to notice it on the discharge
side a bit. It went further on the discharge side when I turned something on.
Obviously, not charging. I started it today and it never went into the charging
area.

I would like to try what I can first to find out the problem before I go the
certificated (A&P) route. I am thinking that the behavior could indicate a bad
regulator. Of course, the generator could be at fault, too. I presume I should
be able to check generator output at the regulator to see if there is
sufficient voltage? That should tell me right there...

Any simple tricks are appreciated. I know we cover this from time to time, but
this time it's my time!
