I found a bit different data, supporting more Daves interpretation.

The Census bureau defines a median income in 1947 at a round $3000 and
translates this to todays Dollars with $23000 !

According to this data, an Ercoupe or any light plane was much more accessible
to the folks some sixty years ago.

I figure it differently, Dave.

In 1947, the median family income was about $1,700.

Now, the median family income is about $50,000 with the median for men
working full time at $44,000 and $34,000 for women working full time.

So, ~50,000/~1,700 = 29

Thus, ~29 * $3,500 = ~$103,000 for an Ercoupe in today's money.

Now, compare that to ~$125,000 for a Skycatcher.

I don't think the true inflation is as low as some of the inflation
tables show.
