Welcome to the world of Ercoupes. When I owned a Piper Cherokee I had the Garmin Pilot III. Now that I am in the Ercoupe I find it works very well and although it is no longer in production you can find some great buys on EBay. You can also get upgrades on the Garmin website as well as downloading a manual.
We have it velcroed on the top of the panel with the back resting on the metal center windscreen bar. We also hot wired it to the electrical system so no batteries are required. In fact we enjoy using this type so much I bought another on EBay for under $ 200 with all the attachments and keep it in my flight bag as a backup. Weighs very little and does everything we need for a safe GPS flight. Works great for night flying as it has a 3 way intensity setting. Bought a 415CD. I probably will need lots of support. Lets start with a Garmin. I am open for recommendations for a hand held. My last plane had one in the panel installed in 1994. Sugesions are appreciated. Don
