Hey Jerry: I have put a shoulder harness system in several Ercoupes that
used the data put together by an Alon owner in Calif. named David Smoler. He
sold the data for $25 which included a pretty complete package that you
could use to get a 337 approved. I have a copy of that data and a 337
approved in 2001. The neat thing about this installation (other than being the
Y
type) is that it did not require any rivets to be put through the outside of
the airplane. Unfortunately, it is not the 4 point system which would
include a strap down to the floor, but it is an excellent 3 point system.
It utilized back-up plates on the two bulkheads behind the baggage
compartment connected with 1/4" steel rods. I realize it is more complicated
than the ones utilized in the STC or the Jack solution. But it is
accompanied by an engineering analysis. If you are interested, I will look
harder for
the package. Worst case, I can provide a copy of what was approved for me.
I know that others have used the David Smoler package too.

I want to install a new seat belt system with shoulder restraints. Is
there already an STC for the Ercoupe to do this? And if not why not? I
figure
that the FAA should have made this as easy as possible for us to make our
planes safer than they are with the old lap belts. I have a 415G model
and want a 4pt. system with the double Y-type of shoulder belts. Do I have
to submit a 337 for this or can I just do it under a current STC? Thanks so
much - Jerry
